    Fosamax is taken for:

    Treating adults with Paget disease, treating and preventing osteoporosis in women past menopause, increasing bone mass in men with osteoporosis, and treating osteoporosis caused by steroid use. It might and be taken for other conditions as determined by your physician.

    Fosamax is a bisphosphonate. It works by slowing the resorption of bone and allowing new bone to be formed.

    Do NOT use Fosamax if:

    • you are allergic to any ingredient in Fosamax
    • you have short blood calcium levels or you have esophagus problems, including difficulty swallowing or a shut or blocked esophagus
    • you are unable to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes

    Contact your physician or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

    Before taking Fosamax :

    Some medical conditions might interact with Fosamax . Tell your physician or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

    • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
    • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
    • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
    • if you have pain or burning upon swallowing, a stomach or intestinal disease, heartburn, chest pain, or kidney problems

    Some MEDICINES MIGHT INTERACT with Fosamax . However, no specific interactions with Fosamax are known at this time.

    This might not be a complete list of all interactions that might occur. Ask your health care provider if Fosamax might interact with other medicines that you use. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

    How to use Fosamax :

    Use Fosamax as directed by your physician. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

    • An extra patient leaflet is available with Fosamax . Talk to your pharmacist if you have questions about this information.
    • Fosamax is effective only if taken on an hollow stomach.
    • Swallow Fosamax whole. Do not split, crush, or chew before swallowing.
    • Use Fosamax by mouth with 6 to 8 ounces (180 to 240 mL) of plain water the first thing in the morning, at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking any other medicine. Fosamax works better if taken 60 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking any other medicine. Taking Fosamax with orange juice, coffee, or mineral water might decrease its effectiveness.
    • Do not lie down for at least 30 minutes after taking Fosamax and until after you have had your first meal or snack of the day.
    • Do not use Fosamax at bedtime or before getting out of bed.
    • Calcium or iron supplements, vitamins, or antacids containing calcium, magnesium, or aluminum might interfere with the absorption of Fosamax . These medicines must be taken at least 30 minutes after taking alendronate.
    • If you miss a dose of Fosamax , use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your natural dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at one time.

    Ask your health care provider any questions you might have about how to use Fosamax .

    Important safety information:

    • Do not drink alcohol, smoke, or use other tobacco products while taking Fosamax .
    • It is important to have enough calcium and vitamin D in your diet. Ask your physician, nurse, or pharmacist if you have questions about your diet or about taking dietary supplements such as calcium or vitamin D.
    • Consider weight-bearing exercises to increase the calcium density of bones.
    • Fosamax might cause jaw bone problems in some patients. You might be at higher risk if you have cancer, poor dental hygiene, certain other conditions (eg, anemia, blood clotting problems, infection, dental problems), or are taking certain medicines or therapies (eg, chemotherapy, corticosteroids, radiation). These problems have often been associated with dental procedures. Talk to your physician about an appropriate dental examination before you begin treatment with Fosamax . Certain dental procedures should be avoided if possible while you are taking Fosamax . Ask your physician any questions you might have about dental treatment while you are taking Fosamax .
    • Lab tests, including calcium levels, might be performed while you use Fosamax . These tests might be taken to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to store all physician and lab appointments.
    • Fosamax should not be taken in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness in children have not been confirmed.
    • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your physician. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of taking Fosamax while you are pregnant. It is not known if Fosamax is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use Fosamax , check with your physician. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

    Possible side effects of Fosamax :

    All medicines might cause side effects, however many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your physician if any of these most GENERAL side effects persist or become bothersome:

    Bloating; bone, muscle, or joint pain; constipation; diarrhea; headache; indigestion; gas; nausea; stomach pain; vomiting.

    Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

    Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); dark or bloody stools; chest pain; difficulty swallowing; new, worsening, or severe heartburn; pain upon swallowing.

    If OVERDOSE is suspected:

    Proper storage of Fosamax :

    Store Fosamax at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), in a tightly closed container. Store away from heat, moisture, and thin. Do not store in the bathroom. Store Fosamax out of the reach of children and away from pets.
